Two Projects!

The projects demonstrates thoughtful decision making and skills with ARC-GIS.


The first project involved analyzing existing data to determine 5 locations for vacant sites to become parks based on various factors.


The second project was about creating a 3d model of a section in Manayunk, Philadelphia utilizing hillshade, DEM, and TIN.

Walking Distance

•A ¼ mile diameter or a 1,320 ft walking distance is used for the buffer and service area to determine the best distance for 5 potential parks in Philadelphia.


•A ¼  mile walking distance accounts for the majority of people including children, elders, and people with disabilities.


•The potential park selection provides more access to more people. The lack of a park in any area means travelling a further distance to access a park and its amenities.


•Improve community connections.


•Reduce overcrowding of existing parks and promote people to go out (lack of parks does not attribute to people going out).

•Select by attribute all vacant lots.


•Select all vacant lots, but keep in mind to preserve residential parcels and utilize only commercial or industrial parcels.


•Initial vacant parcel selection was not precise. Utilized select by location by understanding which lots had buildings and which did not.


•However, the parcels layer had values of the type of properties and with values of different vacant lots in the district.

•Select by attribute all vacant lots.

•Calculate new field utilizing square footage of parcels to determine parcels 1-5 acres.


•Select by attributes all parcels greater then or equal to 1 acre.


•Then select all by attributes all parcels less then or equal to 5 acres. This selection process provides all parcels with a size of 1-5 acres.


•The current selection of parcels are vacant and 1-5 acres.

•Select by location parcels ¼ mile from body of water.


•The ¼ mile walking distance is more accessible for most people.



•By also selecting vacant parcels near a body of water, especially the waterfront, there can be more use out of Philly’s waterfront which is lackluster compared to other major cities.

•Use the point to feature tool to create a point at every park.


•Points of parks will be utilized as facilities.


•Create a service area for the parks with a ¼ mile walking distance.


•Select parcels (potential parks) within the given service area of the parks.


•Switch the selection to select parcels outside the service area.


•The selection narrows down which parcels can become potential parks by selecting parcels by a ¼ mile proximity away from existing parks.



•Conduct a spatial join of neighborhoods and Parks to determine how many parks are within each neighborhood boundary.


•Other neighborhoods had less parks, but did not meat the criteria of the analysis. The current selection of neighborhood consist of:


Kensington

Fishtown

Northern Liberties

Old City

Waterfront Neighborhood (Area not part of Philadelphia Planning Neighborhoods).


•Make a layer of the five neighborhoods. The “Waterfront Neighborhood” must be created.

•Select by location all parcels within the 5 neighborhoods.

•After the rigorous selection process of the parcels. Fishtown was one of the only neighborhood with multiple parcel options for parks.


•Old City, Northern Liberties, and Kensington only had one eligible parcel. However, after conducting a service area study of Penn Treaty Park based on a 2,640 ft walking distance which is approximately 10-15 minutes. A ¼ mile walking distance did not demonstrate the nearest park for selection.


•One park falls completely out of the service area of the park becoming the best parcel choice in Fishtown for a new park. The parcel to park can cover more area come pare to the other parcels.

•Two parcels fit the criteria for potential parks in the District. But the goal of this analysis is to chose one parcel in each district.


•The blue parcel was chosen because of an existing recreational area “Pier 68”. The parcel can become an extension of the recreational spacer since they are in the same parcel. Hence, becoming a larger space and a new park for people of the community.

•Multiple buffers of different distances were used. The 1 mile buffer covers the entire district, meaning potential parcels as parks would be covered by public transportation


•A secondary buffer was tested which was a ¼ mile buffer. Although the buffer covers most of the district, meaning the selected 5 parcels will have access to public transportation, there could be new additions.

•Provide new proposed stops and routes if necessary if a parcel is closer to the waterfront and lacks transportation.


•Transportation was not a limitation of the selection process, rather an opportunity to provide new bus routes and stops for parks missing a connection.


•Select potential park parcels in proximity of ¼ miles of bus transportation.


•Provide new proposed stops and routes if necessary if a parcel is closer to the waterfront and lacks transportation.


•The additions of the new bus routes and stops betters the bus transportation system for many communities, in which users will be able to take advantage of.


•In Fishtown, a new bus route is proposed on Schirra Dr. and Beach St.


•And two stops at Richmond st. and Schirra Dr. and E Cumberland st. and Beach St.


•There is also a new stop in the Waterfront Neighborhood on E Tasker St.

•In the red circle , you'll notice each potential vacant parcels (in blue).


•The orange outline is the ¼ mile service area of the parks. The green includes the park service area and the new potential parks.


•It is noticeable the expansion of the new parks further connects various communities.


•The final selection of the 5 potential vacant parcel offers communities new parks that lacked access to a park.

•Copying and pasting a layer will place all related points in the same origin.


•For each layer, symbolize with different street accessories, in this case, lamp posts, trashcans, and benches.


•Move, rotate, and scale if necessary.
